10 Ways To Break Out Of Your Workout Rut February 16th, 2008
- Sex - yup, it’s first on my list. Who doesn’t like sex? Fifteen minutes of sex burns a little more than 60 calories, about the same amount in a non-fat Starbucks cappaccino. That means I’ll burn off like 300 calories a night!! Just kidding. Seriously.
- Take a hike - if you have any hilly areas around where you, go explore them. You can burn about 400 calories per hour and enjoy the scenery at the same time. I suggest you take a friend with you so you can chat and just enjoy the surroundings together.
- Go dancing - I love to dance. Go to a party or to a club, and just have a great time. 30 minutes of slow ballroom will burn just under 100 calories. As you work up your endurance, of course, you’ll be able to burn more calories.
- Play a sport - nobody said you had to be good, just go out and play. I have played basketball with plenty of old white guys in little shorts and Rec Specs to know that anybody can participate in a sport. Play pick up soccer, join a softball team, or even a kickball team! Just have fun with it.
- Train for a marathon - the reason this is fun is because I know a lot of people have “running a marathon” on their list of things to do before they die. The good thing about this is the motivation. Since it’s something you will want to do for personal satisfaction, you are less than likely to quit.
- Jump in a pool - it still amazes me that people still overlook the pool as a source of quality exercising. 20 minutes of swimming burns about 200 calories.
- Play with kids - it seems like children have an endless amount of energy. Grab your kids (or your nieces, nephews, or cousins), take them to the nearest park, and turn them loose! Get involved with their activities and not only will you enjoy precious quality time, but I’m sure you’ll be winded at the end, too.
- Run with your dog - want a running partner that never complains and is ready to go out whenever you are? Take your pooch along with you
- Go biking - I love to get out and go bike riding. Biking never gets boring because it seems like there’s always someplace new to go. You can go much further on a bike than you can by walking, and the ability become somewhat of an explorer will pique your interest for a while.
- Tour the sites - I’m from Philly, but I live in DC. Between these two cities, there are a TON of historical sites to walk around. Even if you don’t live in history rich areas, your city definitely has a downtown district that you can spend the day walking.
If you get bored from exercising, chances are you will probably stop. There’s only so many times you can run on a treadmill, run around a track, or do whatever you do to stay in shape. Today, I’m going to give you my top 10 alternatives to your daily workout so you can break out of any potential rut.
