I woke up one morning about an hour before my I had set my alarm, and I could not get back to sleep. So, instead of laying in bed, I decided to get up and see what was on TV. While browsing the on-screen guide, I came across a yoga show on the Oxygen Network. Always interested in trying new things, I turned to the station. The show was entitled Inhale, and it was hosted by Steve Ross, the “guru of Los Angeles”. Ross is a renowned yogi and guru who not only has his own show on Oxygen, but also is an author on several yoga books.

I cleared a space on the floor and began to follow Steve’s instructions. After about 20 minutes (his show is an hour long), I had had enough. I had contorted and bent and stretched in ways I never knew were physically possible! And the burn. . . .Jesus, I was sore the whole day! Needless to say, I was immediately hooked.

Yoga is a group of ancient spiritual practices originating in India. The Oxford Center of Hindu Studies defines yoga as “referring to technologies or disciplines of asceticism and meditation which are thought to lead to spiritual experience and profound understanding or insight into the nature of existence.” The major branches of yoga include:

    • Hatha Yoga
    • Karma Yoga
    • Jnana Yoga
    • Bhakti Yoga
    • Raja Yoga

The practice of postures (or asanas) that we associate with yoga is from Hatha Yoga.

For those that are looking for a tremendously effective way to get fit, yoga might be the best choice. Unlike other popular fitness choices such as weight lifting or even running, yoga is safe for people aged 8 to 88. Benefits of yoga include:

    * injury rehabilitation - yoga aims to treat injuries by working with the body’s natural healing systems and improving health on all levels
    * better blood circulation - deep breaths and relaxation of the skeletal muscles will allow the blood to travel to the digestive, reproductive, glandular, and immune systems
    * boost physical strength, flexibility, and stamina – resistance training (similar to what you experience during yoga) actually increases physical strength.
    * tone muscle – toning the muscle actually involves muscle growth, which only occurs during muscle fatigue. Once you try yoga, you’ll really know what muscle fatigue is!
    * reduce weight – yoga actually tones the entire body in a uniform manner, reduce weight in all areas.
    * improve sex life – yoga helps you develop your awareness of sensations in your body and increases energy. Certain postures also increase blood flow and tone the pelvis, which plays an important role In our orgasms. Yes, yoga can help you achieve a better orgasm.

And this is just a very short list! The benefits far outweigh any excuse you may have for why you can’t at least try yoga once. I recommend you buy a yoga DVD, carve out 30 minutes from your busy schedule and give it a try. Trust me, if you have any doubts, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
